It smeared, and continued to smear until after 12 hours. Preferred by many watercolourists, this ink can be used with dip pens, drawing and ruling pens, air brushes and paint brushes. I wrote with it using a dip pen on watercolor paper, waited several hours and scrubbed it with a wet paint brush. I almost didn't buy this due to a review that said it wasn't waterproof anymore, but as long as you let it thoroughly dry it is waterproof. I'm not sure if they have changed the product at all recently with the label change, but this worked very well for me. It does make beautiful wicking dispersion patterns when drawn on to wet watercolor paper. After it dried, the surface was rough, although I suppose that shouldnt surprise me. It doesn't react to the salt trick as well as watercolor paint does for creating texture, however it is a great ink for sumi-e or chinese brush painting. I recently ebonized a bowl with Speedball India Ink, which has shellac in it. I was happy to find that diluted with water I could get a good gray scale, because I also use india ink as a tonal value (shading) underneath watercolor paintings.
